THE MOST FAMOUS MOUNTAIN YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF
Of all the sacred sites in the Bible, perhaps none is less recognized than a humble mountain found in the Lower Galilee. From afar one can easily see why this mountain has attracted attention throughout history: its perfect half-dome shape is visible from all sides due to its unique position in the middle of the fertile, wide Jezreel Valley. The name of this special mountain is Mount Tabor. What does the Bible say about it?
A HUB OF KEY BIBLICAL EVENTS
In the days of the Bible, Mount Tabor was considered such a sacred mountain that it was able to “sing for joy at God’s name” (Psalm 89:12). Its strategic location at the junction of many roads is perhaps what gave it its unique name; tabor means “navel” in Hebrew. In the Hebrew Bible, the mountain is depicted as the site of a crucial battle between the Israelites under the leadership of Deborah and their adversaries the Canaanites (Judges 4:14). In the Gospels it is the site of the Transfiguration, where Jesus ascends to heaven to meet with Moses and Elijah and “his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light” (Matt. 17:2).
