Biblical Battles

Exploring the Hebrew Bible Online

Should Israel follow Biblical protocol?

Since the state of Israel is both a Jewish and a secular country, there is much disagreement about how the country should officially follow the regulations found in the Bible. This question is particularly relevant when it comes to military matters. Should the Israeli Army follow Biblical protocol for battle?
This question has been debated a lot recently in the wake of the killing of a Palestinian terrorist by Sgt. Elor Azaria on March 24, 2016.

The Biblical Law

Defenders of the soldier point to the fact that in the Bible, the Israelite's are commanded by God to “assail the Midianites and defeat them for they assailed you by trickery” (Numbers 25:16). They claim this Biblical command gives a soldier the right to take the life of an attacker before his own life is taken. Critics of Azaria note that at the time of Azaria’s shot, the terrorist had already been neutralized and did not need to be killed.
