What is a Kibbutz? What is the meaning of this Word in Hebrew?
The word Kibbutz (קיבוץ) comes from the root ק-ב-צ which means to gather, to bring together and to convene. The word kibbutz is a gerund with the pattern "kittul" (קיטול), for instance: Sippur (סיפור), Hizzur (חיזור), and more. In the beginning, the Kibbutz settlements were called Kvutzot (קבוצות), meaning groups, and in the 1920's we began to call some of them Kibbutz. According to some Scholars the idea for this name came from a Hassidic description of the holy kibbutz in Bowman - a nickname for the convergence of Breslev Hassidim during Rosh Hashana.
How is Shavuot celebrated in the Kibbutz?
In most of the Kibbutzim, there is a traditional ceremony of the "first fruit", music performances, and more. During the ceremony, there is usually a parade of different tractors and agricultural machines from the beginning of the century. The different industries of the Kibbutz are presented, and dance performances as well as group folk dances take place. In addition, there are arts and crafts activities in the Kibbutz where we make baskets and bouquets and bake small buns in a restored brick oven. My family's Kibbutz has a "cow beauty pageant" every year. The cows participate in a beauty pageant and are shown to the visitors who can read about them and what makes them unique.
