Running water or Living water?

The water that Isaac found in the wells of Abraham is called Mayim Hayim. Surprisingly, the Hebrew words for “running water” here are Living water (מים חיים – Mayim Hayim; Water of life). True, on a physical level Mayim Hayim can refer to running water, and in this sense the translation is correct. But these words also have a deep spiritual meaning which is completely lost in translation. The significance of the words Mayim Hayim cannot be overestimated. Every time these words are used by the prophets in the Tanach, or by Jesus in the New Testament, they always refer to the spiritual level – to the Water of Life, which alone can satisfy the thirst of our hearts.

The Torah is full of hidden treasures – treasures that can only be seen through a deeper understanding of the original Hebrew text. We invite you to take part in our course of Discovering the Hebrew Bible, and together we will discover and unearth these hidden treasures!
